We had carpet at the top of the landing, but I removed it and cut the carpet at the doorway to our bonus room (aka the FROG, which is still carpeted) and then I used some leftover hardwood flooring to replace the carpet that I ripped off the landing. Not perfect wood but okay to paint black. I spent about an hour on Monday sanding all  the wood puttied spots and also the sides of the stairs where I had painted the trim white years ago. (my miter box was old and only cut like 6 inches across. This is the very reason why an ocular visit from the contractor is important when accepting quotes prior to deciding to agree to the project.
